PRIVATE MEMBERS' STATEMENTS- SPRAY DRIFT

I rise to speak on an issue that is of much concern to much of the farming community right around the state, but it is impacting significantly on farming practices in the seat of Chaffey, impacting on neighbours next door and far away. That is spray drift. Spray drift is having a serious impact on neighbouring crops that have seen significant damage through a careless act of the neighbouring farmer.

STATUTES AMENDMENT (NATIONAL ENERGY LAWS) (WHOLESALE MARKET MONITORING) BILL

I would like to make a contribution to the Statutes Amendment (National Energy Laws) (Wholesale Market Monitoring) Bill. I think it is very important. I think most members of this place understand that we do need national energy laws that work and that are transparent, and we would like to think that South Australia will be the lead jurisdiction. The Australian Energy Regulator is limited. There are restrictions for obtaining and using information, a lack of visibility over electricity contract markets and a lack of comprehensive gas market monitoring.

AYERS HOUSE BILL

Mr WHETSTONE (Chaffey) (12:26): I, too, rise to make a contribution to the Ayers House Bill, and I think rightfully so, as it is a great piece of history in the heart of Adelaide. I think it is more than that. It is all about what we as a society have done to preserve our history and the way that the National Trust behaves, commercialising some of those assets so that we can keep them maintained up to visitors' expectations. I think it is critically important that that continues to happen.

SECOND-HAND VEHICLE DEALERS (MISCELLANEOUS) AMENDMENT BILL

Mr WHETSTONE: Yes. I bring this to the chamber's attention, because who knows if it is not happening? Some of the more historical cars, some of those older cars, are starting to become quite valuable. Anything with a steel bumper bar in today's automotive circle of sales or repairs is usually worth a lot more than it was when it was brand new.

GRIEVANCE DEBATE- TRADE RELATIONS

Mr WHETSTONE (Chaffey) (15:34): I rise today to reflect a little bit on one of the most important economic drivers in South Australia, and that is our trade relations with our global partners. On this side of the house, we have always been passionate about promoting South Australia to the world. Just recently, we have had a number of delegates visit here at Parliament House and also out in the business sector. We have seen the ambassador to Lithuania, today we have seen the British High Commissioner, and we have seen the Consul-General visit this place over the last couple of days.

GRIEVANCE DEBATE- CHAFFEY ELECTORATE AWARD RECIPIENTS

Mr WHETSTONE (Chaffey) (15:20): I rise to talk about celebrating Australia Day. Chaffey is made up of dedicated, passionate and proud people and many volunteers, the active community members who make the Riverland and the Mallee a better place to live. On Australia Day, I had the opportunity to celebrate with many of my community members who enrich our regions and provide invaluable service to our communities.

QUESTION TIME - INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LEVY

Mr WHETSTONE (Chaffey) (14:55): My question is to the Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science. Does the state government support an international student levy? With your leave, sir, and that of the house, I will explain.

VETERINARY SERVICES BILL

Mr WHETSTONE (Chaffey) (12:13): I rise to let the chamber know that I will be the lead speaker on this bill. It is a very important bill. The Veterinary Services Bill 2023 is bringing the veterinary science and the veterinary industry into line with modern-day expectation. What we should first and foremost understand is that the Veterinary Services Bill modernises the needs of a very complex industry. The industry is there for different parts of veterinary practices—animal health, animal wellbeing—but it is also an institution that is there for the mental health of human beings and for the wellbeing of animal husbandry and the competitive nature that we as racegoers will sometimes take for granted but the industry does not.

MOTION: INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY

Mr WHETSTONE (Chaffey) (12:55): I, too, rise to support the amended motion and to give recognition that 5 December is International Volunteer Day. It is a big shout-out to all volunteers from all walks of life, whether in metro Adelaide, regional South Australia or anywhere on the globe. Volunteers are the fabric of any community. Whether in a metro town or a regional community, I think it would be fair to say that they are equally valued for the time, care and activity that they create around their dedication to the job.
