If you’re planning to go fishing over the school holidays or Easter long weekend, make sure you know the fishing rules.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone said you can’t underestimate the importance of knowing South Australia’s fishing rules before dropping a line or net.

“Fishing is a popular holiday activity so it’s vital you are prepared before heading out to the water,” said Minister Whetstone.

“Make sure you understand the fishing rules, including size, bag, boat and possession limits as well as the right fishing gear.

“There are plenty of ways you can check on fishing rules—including the free SA Recreational Fishing Guide smartphone app (www.pir.sa.gov.au/recfishingapp), the 24-hour Fishwatch hotline on 1800 065 522, the PIRSA website www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing or even SMS a fish name to 0427 767 995 and receive an immediate text response with information.

“Fishcare Volunteers will be out and about over the holiday period to assist fishers with understanding the rules and offering fishing tips.

“Fisheries Officers will be patrolling popular fishing areas and hotspots over the Easter break, and if you are caught doing the wrong thing, you could be fined and even have your gear seized.

“While most recreational fishers do the right thing, it is important that everyone follows the rules, to preserve fish stocks for future generations.”
