The Southern Zone Rock Lobster season opens today, with recreational fishers now able to enjoy lowering their pots in the area for the season.
The Southern Zone covers waters from the Murray Mouth to the Victorian border and the season extends until Thursday 31 May 2020.
Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone said Southern Rock Lobster was a popular species among recreational fishers in the South East.
“I remind all recreational fishers to ensure your 2019-2020 pot registrations are in place and brush up on the rules,” said Minister Whetstone
“By correctly following the fishing rules you are ensuring the long-term sustainability of our fish stocks for future generations to enjoy.
“I commend the majority of fishers who do take notice of the rules and respect them.
“The fishing rules are easily available at www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing, via the SA Recreational Fishing Guide app or by calling Fishwatch on 1800 065 522.
“If fishers suspect someone isn’t doing the right thing I urge them to call Fishwatch on 1800 065 522, their report can remain anonymous. Reports can also be made via the SA Recreational Fishing Guide app.”
The Northern Zone Rock Lobster season will reopen at midday on Friday 1 November 2019.
Southern Zone Rock Lobster fishing rules at a glance:
- Minimum carapace length – 9.85cm (Southern Zone only)
- Daily individual bag limit – 4 (per person, per day)
- Daily boat limit – 8 (where two or more people are on board)
- Berried Rock Lobster (females carrying eggs) are protected and must be returned to the water immediately
- Recreational fishers must clip the middle tail fan horizontally in half before landing.
All Rock Lobster pots must be registered before use, with a maximum of two pots per person. They can only be operated and checked by the holder of the current registration.
If you are caught using or interfering with pots not registered in your name, penalties of up to $20,000 can apply.
