Double blow for Adelaide Oval patrons

South Australian families and sport fans are set to take another hit to the hip pocket with Adelaide Oval’s Stadium Management Authority forced to pass an almost 750 per cent increase in the Emergency Service Levy.

South Australian families and sport fans are set to take another hit to the hip pocket with Adelaide Oval’s Stadium Management Authority forced to pass an almost 750 per cent increase in the Emergency Service Levy.

A Weatherill Labor Government decision to remove a rebate on ESL has resulted in the SMA receiving a bill rising from $37,000 to $311,000 in 2014-15 – an increase of almost 750 per cent.

Confirmation of the astronomical ESL rise for Adelaide Oval comes as a double blow for families and sport fans, after it was revealed that ticket prices will rise due to Labor’s transport levy.

Shadow Minister for Recreation and Sport Tim Whetstone said the SMA has no choice but to pass the ESL rise on to attendees.

“It beggars belief that this Labor Government has hit a vital piece of sporting infrastructure with an almost 750 per cent increase in its Emergency Services Levy,” Mr Whetstone said.

“As a result of the ESL rise, the SMA has no other choice but to pass on the increased costs to attendees through ticket prices and other costs at the ground.”

“South Australian households and businesses are already being hit by this defacto land tax and it puts even further pressure on families struggling to cope with increased cost of living pressures.

“Along with Labor’s levy on transport to Adelaide Oval, sports fans will now be slugged even further with extra costs at the gate to pay for years of the Weatherill Government’s financial mismanagement.”

Mr Whetstone said watching live sporting events at Adelaide Oval, such as international cricket, should be made affordable for families.

“At a time when we should be encouraging South Australians to participate in sport and to attend live sporting events, we are taxing them into oblivion,” Mr Whetstone said.
